Evidence-Based Practice Course (2 days)
This course is designed to provide the attendee with an understanding of the importance of evidence for the advancement of nursing practice, improvement of varied outcomes, and the advancement of the discipline of nursing. Emphasis is placed on the interplay of research principles, appraisal of evidence, and evidence-based practice (EBP) processes. The course will focus on the current urgency of evidence application to practice and will provide a hands-on illustration of how to appraise, summarize, and translate evidence to support recommendations for quality clinical practice. Attendees will utilize an evidence hierarchy and grading schema to review, analyze, and synthesize clinical evidence and will develop a PICO (clinical problem) that is applicable to an EBP approach and problem. Attendees will explore EBP models to determine which model is most appropriate to an identified problem. Upon completion of the course, students will have an understanding of key principles and strategies critical for implementation of EBP process.
Research and Evidence-Based Practice Dissemination Course (3.5 days)
This course includes presentations by military nursing leaders; nationally known clinical experts; and triservice active, Reserve, Guard, and retired military nurse scientists and researchers. Poster abstracts and research/evidence-based practice (EBP) presentations and a variety of networking opportunities are featured. Clinical innovations in research and EBP projects are showcased to stimulate research questions and effective interventions. Research methodology and education sessions provide CEUs for participants.
Research Development Course (3 days)
The Research Development Course introduces the research process to military nurses who are interested in research but need education and mentoring on identifying a research question or planning a research study. The target audience of this course is nurses with limited or no research experience or training who are interested in research; novice nurse scientists with some experience but who have not submitted a grant application; and nurses who have submitted a grant application that needs further development.
Research and Evidence-Based Practice Grant Camp (5 days)
The Research and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Grant Camp is designed for novice nurse scientists and graduate (master's and doctoral) nursing students who plan to submit a research or EBP grant application in response to a TSNRP Call for Proposals. The Research and Evidence-Based Grant Camp features a modest amount of didactic content about grantsmanship and a substantial time during which attendees apply the didactic content to continue writing their application on the appropriate grant application forms. Attendees receive faculty feedback regarding their grant applications throughout the course.
Attendees must be prepared to spend a significant amount of time, both before and during Research and Evidence-Based Practice Grant Camp, preparing and writing their grant applications. Given the emphasis on grantsmanship, attendees are expected to arrive with a robust knowledge of the topic they have chosen, the research process, research design and methods, relevant variables and measures, and data analysis. Graduate students should have completed some research, methods, and statistics classes and, ideally, have selected at least the chairperson of their thesis or dissertation committee.
The goal of the Research and Evidence-Based Practice Grant Camp is for attendees to produce a scientifically sound research or EBP grant application on a topic that aligns with the research priorities of TSNRP. Topics should also be in alignment with the student's dissertation chair and committee.
