  • General Surgery
    • General surgeons handle a broad range of surgical conditions affecting nearly every area of the body and are often responsible for the comprehensive care of the surgical patient. The general surgery residency ranges from 4-6 years, depending on the specific program. Fellowships are available in following areas (consult service specific GME websites for more information regarding sub-specialty training):

    • A neurosurgeon provides operative and non-operative care for disorders of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems, as well as related vasculature. The neurological surgery residency is generally 6 years.     • Obstetrics and Gynecology
      • Obstetrics and Gynecology is medical field dealing with medical and surgical care of the pregnant patient, the delivering of babies, and the medical and surgical care for conditions that affect the female reproductive system. Board certification requires training in an accredited residency program lasting at least 4 years. Fellowship opportunities in Obstetrics and Gynecology include the following:

  • Ophthalmology
    • Ophthalmology is a specialty that focuses on the comprehensive care and treatment of the eyes and vision. Ophthalmologists are the only medical practitioners who are medically trained to diagnose and treat all disorders pertaining to the eyes and vision. Typical patient care includes vision services, such as prescribing corrective lenses, the treatment of ocular disorders, and performing surgical procedures. Training in ophthalmology requires a one year transitional internship during PGY1, followed by a three year residency.

  • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Orthopedic surgery is the surgical specialty that deals specifically with the care of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, muscles, nerves, arteries and overlying skin. Board certification involves completion of an orthopedic surgery residency lasting at least 5 years. Certain programs, such as the residency at Walter Reed, require an extra year of research. Accredited fellowships are offered in the following areas:

  • Otolaryngology
    • An otolaryngologist is a head and neck surgeon that provides care for diseases that affect the ears, nose, throat, respiratory, and upper alimentary systems. The otolaryngology residency is 4-5 years, depending on the specific program.   • Urology
    • Urology is a specialty that focuses on the surgical treatment of the male and female urinary tracts, including the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra. Urology also addresses injuries and disorders of the the male reproductive system. Board certification requires a completion of a 5-6 year residency, which includes 1 year in general surgery and possibly a year of research. The American Urological Association has identified 7 urological subspecialties.

      • Urologic Oncology, 2 years
      • Renal Transplantation, 2 years
      • Male Infertility, 1-2 year
      • Calculi (Urinary tract stones), 1-2 years
      • Female Urology*, 2 years
      • Neurourology (voiding disorders, urodynamic evaluation of patients, and erectile dysfunction or impotence)
      • The American Board of Urology offers a subspecialty certificate for accredited fellowships in Pediatric Urology and jointly offers board certification in female urology with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
