NOTICE TO STUDENTS: All Units of WRMC and NNMC as well as SAMMC North and SAMMC South will be integrated late in the 2011 school year. It has not been determined when the inpatient units of the hospitals will be merged. The descriptions below should be valid for the school year ending in 2011, however when these changes occur, course sites may be moved to other locations.

Description: Students are assigned to an inpatient, outpatient or consultation neurology service where they evaluate and manage patients as part of a team consisting of other med students, residents, and Staff Members. They participate in teaching rounds, conferences, lectures/seminars. The objective is to teach students principles of neurologic diagnosis and management in preparation for internship. Students must pass a written examination as well as document by WebLog experience with 11 core patients as well as a Neurologic Examination witnessed by an instructor.
Comments: with additional arrangements the Neurology Clerkship may satisfy the requirement for a Non-Surgical Sub Internship for students assigned to the WRAMC or MAMC Inpatient Services. Also with additional arrangements the Clerkship may satisfy a Surgical Sub Internship if assigned to WRAMC Neurosurgery.

Description: Rotate for 2 wks on inpatient consult svc & outpatient clinic & electrodiagnostic lab. This elective provides exposure to Physical & Occupational Therapy. Students attend morning reports & conferences as well as noon lectures. The focus is on diagnosis & treatment of neuromuscular & musculoskeletal disorders & diseases and the study of mechanisms by which disease & disability impair functional performance and develop/implement treatment.
Grading Criteria: Pass/Fail unless students are taking it as a Neurology Clerkship alternative in which case the grade is based on a performance evaluation and a written examination.
Comments: Students with career aspirations in Physical Medicine may take this as an alternative Neurology clerkship in round 2 and 3. They must meet all requirements of the Neurology Clerkship as listed above.

Description: Students are assigned to a consult team consisting of a Neurology staff attending, a senior resident & generally an internal med. resident. Students work up inpatient consults & present these cases w/continuing follow-up. Patient mix will emphasize the range of neurologic complications seen in a tertiary medical/surgical & intensive care environment. See "Neurology Clerkship" for other requirement.

Description: Students participate in activities of the service/surgical applications, ward rounds, lectures/seminars; patient responsibilities under supervision of ward officer and the resident staff. They evaluate patients w/ variety of neurological complaints in order to enhance their skill in performing neurological exams & in formulating/evaluating appropriate differential diagnostic possibilities. See See "Neurology Clerkship" for other requirements if this course is taken for Neurology credit.

Comments: Students may satisfy neurology requirements by taking this course and completing the additional requirements listed under "Neurology Clerkship". It is also offered by the Department of Surgery NOT for Neurology credit. With prior arrangement it may be used to satisfy the Surgical Sub Internship.

Description: Students will rotate on both outpatient/inpatient physical medicine consultation services. They will evaluate & participate in management of common neurological, neurosurgical & musculoskeletal practice areas of physiatry, including stroke, spinal cord trauma & acute/chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes. Assist in management of patients under supervision of resident/staff physiatrist.
Grading Criteria: Clinical performance/topic presentation.
Comments: Prepare short presentation to topic relevant to practice of physiatry. Attend lectures. This elective may not be substituted for the Neurology requirement.

Description: Inpatient consultations of patients with neurobehavioral disorders, psychiatric illness, or medical complications or disease resulting in behavioral or mental status change. OPT assessment of patients with dementia, head injury, stroke, and other disorders resulting in cognitive/behavioral deficits; didactic weekly lectures on topics in neurobehavior. Weekly case conferences.

Description: Participate in basic lab research, studying the interaction the macrophages & endothelium in rendering the endothelium procoagulant in individuals with risk factors for stroke. Adhesion molecule and cytokine expression, endothelial adhesion on monocytes, & therapeutic studies with inhibitors of monocyte adhesion & cytokines in animal models of high stroke risk studied.
