The Military Health Services Research Center within HSA is the research arm of the division. The Center maintains access to large federal health care databases in the Military Health System (MHS) in the Defense, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Access to data in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) within the Department of Veterans Affairs is potentially available also. Approximately half of the American population receives health care either directly delivered or paid for by one of these systems, and the resulting encounter information is available for research purposes.
In the past several years, the following topics have been the subject of MPH projects for students in the HSA track:
Individuals who wish to pursue an HSA research project are encouraged to engage one of the HSA faculties as project advisor; those wishing to pursue the HSA concentration should strongly consider asking one of the HSA faculties to serve as faculty advisor or co-advisor.
The Epidaurus Project Symposium on Healing Design is designed to address design principles that make a healthcare facility patient- and family-centered. Architectural design and care program design are critical elements that work in concert to allow the patient to serve as the focus of every encounter within the health care system, to make every encounter a healing encounter.
The Epidaurus Project brings together architects, designers, clinicians, healthcare policy makers, and bioethicists to examine the challenges and principles of patient centeredness. Participants are drawn from the federal government, academia, and the private sector.
