What is Pharmacology?

Two booklets, Medicines By Design and Why Do Basic Research? , prepared by the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), show important work done by pharmacologists. NIGMS primarily supports basic biomedical research that is not targeted to specific diseases or disorders. Because scientific breakthroughs often originate from such untargeted studies, NIGMS-funded work has contributed substantially to the tremendous progress that biomedical research has made in recent years. The Institute's training programs help to provide the most critical element of good research: well-prepared scientists. NIGMS is an Institute within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) complex. NIH, the principle biomedical research agency of the federal government, is a component of the Public Health Service within the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Pharmacology Societies

ASPET - The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the major professional society in the USA for pharmacologists, aims to promote and apply pharmacological knowledge. ASPET has almost 5,000 members and encourages applications for graduate student membership. The Society publishes several major journals in the field of pharmacology (see below) and holds an annual scientific meeting. ASPET Public Affairs Officers represent the interests of pharmacologists with the federal government, research funding agencies, and educational organizations such as the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). More information is available by e-mail from aspetinfo@faseb.org

ASCPT - Founded in 1900, the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics has a membership of over 2,100 professionals. ASCPT is the largest scientific and professional organization serving the discipline of clinical pharmacology. Its primary interest is to promote and advance the science of human pharmacology and therapeutics. Physicians (69%) and other doctoral scientists (29%) compose most of the membership; pharmacists, nurses, research coordinators, fellows in training, and other professionals make up the remaining 2%.

IUPHAR - Founded in 1959 as a section of the International Union of Physiological Sciences, the International Union of Pharmacology has been independent since 1966. IUPHAR, a voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit association of national organizations, represents pharmacologists from 47 member countries and 3 regional associations.

Related Societies

Pharmacologists are often members of other scientific societies. Because the tools of the modern pharmacologist are also drawn from other scientific disciplines, pharmacologists at USUHS belong to a number of these societies. A few are:

Many scientific journals are devoted to pharmacology and pharmacological research. Some of the more important journals are:
