Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship

The Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship of the National Capital Consortium has been training fellows in Neonatology for over 25 years.  It is a unique training program that takes full advantage of the numerous resources available in the National Capital Area.  Approximately one-third of the curriculum is devoted to clinical duties with the remaining time devoted to research activities.  The majority of the clinical experience is gained at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).  The NICU at the NNMC is the only DOD level 3 facility in the National Capital Area. NICU admissions number 500-600/year in a catchment area that is inclusive of 4000 deliveries per year among three military treatment facilities.   Additional clinical rotations take place at Georgetown University Hospital, Inova Fairfax Medical Center and Children's National Medical Center.  Research opportunities abound in the National Capital Area.  Fellows are matched with a research mentor early in the course of their fellowship.  The research mentor guides the fellow through the entire research process from the development of a research question to publication of the manuscript.  Research facilities utilized by the program include the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.  The diversity of clinical and scholarly experience is designed to produce an exceptional academic neonatologist ready to fulfill the unique requirements of military, government and civilian practice.
