Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injury: Post-Injury Inflammation, Regeneration and Metabolic Changes
The research in Dr. Byrnes' laboratory focuses on inflammation following traumatic brain and spinal cord injury. More specifically, this laboratory studies acute and chronic inflammatory responses, specifically of microglia, to injury in the CNS. Using rodent brain and spinal cord injury models, the microglial responses to graded injuries can be investigated following various therapeutic interventions, using both behavioral and histological outcome measures. Microglial, neuronal and oligodendroglial culture models are also utilized to study these microglial protein roles.
The effect of mild traumatic brain injury on glucose metabolism, and the effect of metabolism state on subsequent injuries is also being explored in a collaborative project with the USUHS PET imaging facility. Mild closed head or fluid percussion injury is known to change brain metabolism state. These studies in the laboratory will explore the effect of these changes in a repetitive head injury model.
