Local Area Attractions
USU is located in Bethesda, MD, a suburb immediately adjacent to Washington, D.C. The University is located in a park-like setting on grounds of the National Naval Medical Center. Wooded areas with jogging and biking trails surround the University. A nearby Metro subway station provides convenient access to Downtown Washington and surrounding areas. The D.C. metropolitan area has about 3 million people, contains 7 major Universities (including 3 other medical schools), numerous colleges, and internationally renowned research facilities. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Library of Medicine, and the National Naval Medical Center are within easy walking distance of USUHS. Also located nearby are the National Institutes of Standards and Technology, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Cultural and recreational activities are plentiful and convenient including major park systems, recreation facilities, museums, theaters, symphonies, opera and major league sports teams. The Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic Coast and Shenandoah Mountains are easily accessible from Bethesda. The cost of living is comparable to that of other major metropolitan areas.
