How to Apply

There are no application fees. Applicants must be United States citizens and must have a bachelor's degree. Applicants must be either active-duty military or civilians who will join a particular service upon acceptance into the Program. Active-duty military incur a service obligation of six or seven years depending on the Service. Civilian applicants who join a specific service will be obligated to seven years active duty service plus six years listing on the individual ready reserve (IRR) roster. Internships and post-doctoral fellowships are not credited toward satisfying this obligation. Choice and assignment to a particular service will depend on the applicant's preferences, the service's preferences, and the availability of training positions in the individual services. The U.S. Army requires that applicants are on active duty with the Medical Service Corps (though others have been considered for an interview in the past if meeting application requirements).

Applicants must complete the Graduate Education Office's ONLINE application for Admission to Graduate Study available at: http://gapp.usuhs.mil. For addendum please visit http://www.usuhs.mil/graded/application.html.

In addition to completing the application, applicants must provide: a personal statement of goals; official transcripts of course work at all universities or colleges attended; three letters of reference from individuals familiar with the academic work or scientific achievements of the applicant; and scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) (the Advanced Test in Psychology is not required).

The minimum GPA is a 3.2. GRE scores (Verbal + Quantitative) of 1100 or greater are preferred. Of students admitted from 1994-1999, the average undergraduate GPA was 3.67 and the average Verbal and Quantitative combined score was 1238.

Process and Deadlines
As of 2008, Navy is requiring all civilian applicants to submit their completed application to their recruiter by December 31st of the year prior to being accepted into the Clinical Program. Please contact Dr. Eric Getka at 301-295-2476, eric.getka@med.navy.mil for guidance.

The student selection process involves active participation of core faculty members and adjunct military faculty. Military clinical psychologists from the relevant services review prospective applicants' military background and interests to assess aptitude for a career in Military Clinical Psychology. Prior military achievement relevant to successful attainment of program goals and objectives also is evaluated. The final selection process includes formal interview of those students who have been determined to be of acceptable quality and interest from written application information.
