Second-year project

Conduct and write-up empirical study under guidance of advisor.

Ph.D. Qualifying Exams

Pass required and elective questions in two-day written exam.

Teaching

Serve as a teaching assistant for at least one course.


Years 2 and 3

Master's Thesis

Expand and reformat second-year project into Master's thesis OR conduct a new project to constitute a Master's thesis. Thesis must be approved by committee of major advisor and two other faculty in the Department.

Pass elective courses

Courses as agreed upon by the student and advisor


Year 3

Third-Year Paper

Write major review paper in the style of Psychological Bulletin. Paper must be approved by two full-time faculty in the Department other than the advisor.

Teaching

Serve as a teaching assistant for at least one course.


Year 4

Years 4 and 5

Research and Doctoral Dissertation

Refine research, data analytic, and writing skills. Conduct pilot work that will lead to the dissertation. Defend the dissertation proposal, conduct and write up the project, and defend the completed project.


Note: USUHS allows a maximum of seven years to complete all Ph.D. requirements


How to Apply

There are no application fees. Applicants must be United States citizens and have a bachelor's degree. Applicants must complete the application for Admission to Graduate Study available from the Graduate Education Office. In addition to completing the application, applicants must provide: a personal statement of goals; official transcripts of course work at all universities or colleges attended; three letters of reference from individuals familiar with the academic work or scientific achievements of the applicant; and scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) (the Advanced Test in Psychology is not required).
 
There are no minimum GPA or GRE requirements, but a GPA of 3.2 or above, and GRE scores (Verbal + Quantitative) of 1100 or greater are preferred.
 
Process and Deadlines
As of 2008, Navy is requiring all civilian applicants to submit their completed application to their recruiter by December 31st of the year prior to being accepted into the Clinical Program.

 
The deadline for application is January 15 for consideration for admission to the program the following Fall. All materials must be received by the Graduate Education Office (GEO) by this deadline. The academic year begins at the end of August. Successful applicants, therefore, should be prepared to report to USUHS by mid-August.
 
The student selection process involves active participation of core faculty members. Interviews are not required, but applicants are encouraged to visit the Department to meet faculty and enrolled program students.

Financial Aid

There are no tuition costs at USUHS. Civilian students do not incur any military or national service obligation. Students are responsible for textbook costs.
