There are no application fees. Applicants must be United States citizens and have a bachelor's degree. Applicants must complete the application for Admission to Graduate Study available from the Graduate Education Office. In addition to completing the application, applicants must provide: a personal statement of goals; official transcripts of course work at all universities or colleges attended; three letters of reference from individuals familiar with the academic work or scientific achievements of the applicant; and scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) (the Advanced Test in Psychology is not required).
There are no minimum GPA or GRE requirements, but a GPA of 3.2 or above, and GRE scores (Verbal + Quantitative) of 1100 or greater are preferred.
Process and Deadlines
As of 2008, Navy is requiring all civilian applicants to submit their completed application to their recruiter by December 31st of the year prior to being accepted into the Clinical Program.
The deadline for application is January 15 for consideration for admission to the program the following Fall. All materials must be received by the Graduate Education Office (GEO) by this deadline. The academic year begins at the end of August. Successful applicants, therefore, should be prepared to report to USUHS by mid-August.
The student selection process involves active participation of core faculty members. Interviews are not required, but applicants are encouraged to visit the Department to meet faculty and enrolled program students.
Application Information
Applications are now submitted online at http://www.usuhs.mil/geo/application.html.
Financial Aid
There are no tuition costs at USUHS. Civilian students do not incur any military or national service obligation. Students are responsible for textbook costs.
Most students in the Department are receiving or have received some form of financial support. These include the following:
- 1) University Stipends. Many students in the Department receive University stipends, which are provided to civilian students for the first three years of training. During the 2000-2001 academic year, stipends were $25,000 per year for three years and the Dean's Special Fellowship includes an additional $5,000 per year.
- 2) Dean's Fellowships. A limited number of Dean's Special Fellowships are available to successful applicants who are nominated by the Department. These competitive Fellowships are designed to recognize outstanding scholarship and academic credentials of incoming students. The Fellowships provide the standard graduate student stipend for four years with an additional $5,000 per year. Fellowship recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 and must apply for outside fellowships during the second, third, and fourth years of support, but the stipend is guaranteed if outside funding is not received. To compete for the Dean's Special Fellowships, applicants must be nominated by the Department.
- 3) Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HMJF) Fellowship in Medical Sciences. This Fellowship provides a $25,000 annual stipend and funding for travel for the fifth year of study. The Fellowship is competitive. Students apply during the fourth year.
- 4) Research Assistantships. A number of students in the Department receive funded research assistantships paid for by individual faculty extramural research grants. It is anticipated that this will be a frequent source of financial support for students in their 4th and 5th year of graduate study.
Students also are encouraged to apply for predoctoral awards from government and foundation sources.
