Colonel Stephen C. Craig, Assistant Professor
Colonel Stephen C. Craig received his B.S.Virginia Military Institute (1978), a D.O. from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (1982) and an M.T.M.& H from Uniformed Services University (1991). He completed his internship at Dwight David Eisenhower AMC and a Preventive Medicine residency at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He is board certified in Preventive Medicine and currently serves as Medical Corps History Consultant to the Army Surgeon General.
His professional military training includes the AMEDD Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Aviation Basic Course, Navy Diving Medical Officer Course, Army Jumpmaster Course, Civil Affairs Course, and the Command and General Staff College.
Col Craig has served as Battalion Flight Surgeon, 82d Airborne Division, OIC, Aviation Medicine Clinic, Ft. Rucker, AL; Regimental Surgeon, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Preventive Medicine Officer, 96th Civil Affairs Bn, Chief, Preventive Medicine Service, Womack AMC, Ft. Bragg, NC, and at West Point, Chief, Epidemiology Programs, U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, Deputy Chief of Staff for Clinical Operations and Chief, Preventive Medicine, 30th Medical Brigade, Heidelberg, Germany. He is currently an Associate Professor, Department of Military and Emergency Medicine and Assistant Professor in Medical History at USUHS.
He has published numerous articles on parachute injury and infectious disease epidemiology and military medical history, and is on the editorial staff of Military Medicine and the AMEDD Journal. He is currently writing a biography of former Army Surgeon General George Miller Sternberg.
Colonel Craig's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, four awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service and Army Achievement Medals, NATO Service Medal, and three awards of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Combat Medical, Senior Flight Surgeon, and Senior Parachutist Badges.
He is a recipient of the U.S. Army Flight Surgeon of the Year Award, the George M. Sternberg Medal for academic excellence in preventive medicine, and the MG Spurgeon Neel Writing Award.
