Information for Incoming Medical Students

Information Technology Inprocessing

Incoming School of Medicine students will begin inprocessing with the Helpdesk, on Aug. 4 or 5, depending on their service. The following information will help them utilize the information technology resources at the University.

Students will be able to log onto the university computers with the Common Access Card, or CAC, and with a username and password. In order to log in with the CAC, students will need to know their CAC PIN. If students do not know their PIN, they will be provided directions on resetting the PIN.

The CACs contain digital certificates. Three certificates are required to use Department of Defense networks. Unfortunately, these may not be on all CACs. The Helpdesk will assess certificates and if necessary make an appointment for students at the National Naval Medical Center to update the CAC.

Network usernames, passwords and e-mail information will be provided during the MDL orientation. Students will need to provide a copy of their service's Information Awareness Training Certificate during the Aug. 4/5 orientations or the MDL orientation to activate USU accounts.

The Department of Defense prohibits the use of USB thumb drives on their networks. In order to move data to a USU computer, students will need to send it by e-mail, upload it to a service portal, or copy it to a CD.

The University provides the following services to students:

  • Student will receive a copy of the MS Office 2007 for PC or the 2008 version for MAC for home use (the USU standard is the 2007/2008 version).
  • Wireless access to a .edu network is provided in the student lounge, library, cafeteria and MDL. Once accounts are activated, students may set up personal computers, handheld devices and smartphones on the wireless network.
  • Students will be issued a TurningPoint Student Response "clicker" during the MDL orientation.
  • A license for 5-Minute Clinical Consult, which runs on Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm and IPhone platform, will be available in September.
  • The University provides a SharePoint site for students to share information. Access information will be provided at the MDL orientation.
  • The USU network computers are accessible in MDL labs, the library and the student lounge, 24 hours a day (in most cases).
