Faculty Development Survey 2010

The data from the recent Faculty Development Survey are presented for your review and comment. Faculty self assessment of competences in three areas (i.e., teaching, research & other scholarly activities, and management) were identified by rating individual competency scores according to (1) how important each is for you personally; and (2) your knowledge/skill level regarding each competency.

Table 1 provides mean scores for each competency and Table 2 provided a summary of paired values for each question) i.e., the value of each item and the level of expertise are presented together. Based upon our initial review of the data, the following areas appear to be the most commonly identified topics for future faculty development.

  • Simulation
  • Distance learning/Asynchronous learning
  • Team teaching/teaching in small groups
  • Lectures--formats and methods
  • Case-based learning

Other areas of strong interest included teaching critical thinking and problem solving skills.

We invite you to review these data and to provide feedback regarding these and/or other areas needed for faculty development by faculty in your department, program, or clerkship. Please send your comments and suggestions to Dr. Wilson at cwilson@usuhs.mil by 30 July. We plan to begin faculty development sessions at the beginning of the academic year.
