Dr. Louis Pangaro to Receive 2012 APDIM Award

Pangaro selected for ACP mastership - Decorative PhotographThe Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) will award Louis N. Pangaro, MD, the 2012 APDIM Distinguished Medical Educator Award during Academic Internal Medicine Week 2012, at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, AZ. The Distinguished Medical Educator Award recognizes an individual or team for a history of outstanding contributions to graduate medical education, expertise in medical education, and scholarly achievement in the broad field of education.

Throughout his career, Dr. Pangaro has been an innovative leader and valued contributor to medical education. His nominators assert his tireless efforts as an educator: "Dr. Pangaro has been a notable educator at both the student and resident level in internal medicine and his seminal papers have served as a call to arms among internal medicine educators." His methods for evaluating medical students have been utilized across the country and his colleagues collectively agree that his approach, deemed the "trifecta of true educational scholarship which includes innovation, publication, and dissemination," is what makes him extraordinary.

Dr. Pangaro's nominators highlighted his career within the educational internal medicine community from the beginning of his career in medical school throughout a remarkable history of service. He has dedicated much of his career to the academic and professional development of his students beginning with his first appointment as clerkship director at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine. A former Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) President, Dr. Pangaro has been a nationally recognized leader. He has also been a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners as well as the president of the Alliance for Clinical Education, the coordinating body of all national clerkship groups.

Dr. Pangaro is also the recipient of the William P. Clements Award for excellence in education at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, the Army Meritorious Services Medal for faculty development programs, and the CDIM Outstanding Educational Program Development Award. In 2006, this award was named in his honor.

Dr. Pangaro is currently Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine. Prior to his long history at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Dr. Pangaro was an instructor in the Department of Medicine at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Dr. Pangaro earned his undergraduate degree and his MD from Georgetown University School of Medicine. After completing his internship and residency at Georgetown University Hospital, he went on to complete his fellowship in endocrinology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
