Introduction to Clinical Medicine: The Physical Examination
The Physical Examination (30 AUG - 4 OCT 2012) THURSDAY afternoons, 1300-1630 p.m.
In the new Integrated Clinical Skills (ICS) sessions, there will be a 3:1 student to faculty ratio, and there will be a total of three cases discussed at each session. For example, in the abdominal pain session, students will be exposed to cases of pancreatitis, cholelithiasis, and IBS. Each student will have 20 minutes to complete a focused H&P with a standardized patient, who will have a specific chief complaint, followed by an oral presentation to the group, and finishing with faculty teaching time. The entire session will be 2.5 hours long, and will allow faculty and peer observation and feedback of each student's performance. We will provide very specific teaching hand-outs with detailed teaching points to cover for each session for the preceptors. This format allows greater flexibility for faculty teaching during an academic year AND for faculty to choose to participate in content areas in which they feel they have special expertise.
