We hope this will be one of the most valuable experiences you have in medical school. Regardless of what specialty you choose, our clerkship provides you with an experience that will form a foundation for your life as a physician. Our overall goal is your "growing independence." An effective, confident physician successfully combines the personal qualities of compassion and commitment (duty) with an ever-evolving knowledge base to complement sharpened academic and clinical skills (expertise). The rewards of establishing a successful approach to patients and their care will remain with you throughout your career.
Our 10-week clinical Clerkship in Internal Medicine provides students with an intense opportunity to apply current fund of knowledge and basic history taking and diagnostic skills to multiple situations and settings. Although observing staff physicians and house officers is of benefit, most learning comes through personal experience. You cannot be a bystander during the Internal Medicine Clerkship! This is a new and more participatory learning process when compared to the basic science years. The Clerkship in Internal Medicine occurs in seven of our teaching hospitals and will include both ward (inpatient) and ambulatory (outpatient) experiences.
The following video summarizes RIME-- the basis for student evaluation—used in many Clerkships across the Country-- from Louis Pangaro, Chair of Medicine.
If you have any questions, problems, or suggestions, please contact your Clerkship Site Director or one of us. We look forward to working with you and learning from each other.
