Associate Professor

Promotion to Associate Professor requires demonstration of longitudinal commitment to student education. We will not hold PCS moves against you! (In other words, if you were appointed as an Assistant Professor and then deployed or PCS'ed to a location with minimal student engagement, this is not your fault). In general, promotion to Associate Professor requires (see checklist):

  1. ~ 6 years at the Assistant Professor level
  2. 4-6 peer reviewed publications (6 is preferred)
  3. Demonstration of scientific inquiry (grant funding is gold standard, if you have submitted IRB proposal, this also counts!)
  4. Level 2 teaching. This is demonstration of teaching outside of your department/institution. Common examples include USAFP and AAFP
  5. Institutional service. The Promotions Committee needs to see some level of service to the discipline of Family Medicine that can be related to the University and its' educational mission

Your way to market your promotion package. The portfolio must include your Academic CV (with USU student teaching and service included); Abbreviated CV (Board of Regents format--not everyone has time to read the full CV!); Educational philosophy; Evidence of Clinical Privileges (credentials); Continuing Medical Education (verification of CME hours) and 4 samples of your academic writing (.pdf files of your lead-author papers). With a sound Educator's Portfolio, the promotion process is much smoother for all reviewers.
