Dr. Newby received his B.A. in Sociology and MSW from Howard University, Washington, DC. He received his DSW from Catholic University, Washington, DC, specializing in social work education. Dr. Newby spent 27 years in the U.S. Army as a social work officer. He was Chief of Social Work Service at Dewitt Army Community Hospital, Fort Belvoir, VA and the 5th General Hospital, Stuttgart, Germany. Dr. Newby also served as the Director of the Human Resources Directorate, Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) and was a research social worker in the Department of Psychiatry, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He was a member of the U.S. Army Surgeon Generalÿs Minority HIV Advisory Group and served as a member of the District of Columbia's HIV Prevention Community Planning Committee in which he reviewed grant proposals for funding by the District of Columbia Agency for HIV/AIDS.
Upon retirement from the U.S. Army, Dr. Newby was the WRAMC Site Coordinator for a behavioral prevention HIV/AIDS research program involving military personnel. He also served as a clinical social worker for the Gulf War Health Center, WRAMC. Dr. Newby joined the staff of the Department of Psychiatry, USUHS in June 1996. He is a Research Assistant Professor assigned to the Family Violence and Trauma Project.
