Dr. Privitera received his A.B. degree from the University of Rochester and his M.D. from Northwestern University Medical School. He completed a rotating internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida before entering the U.S. Army and completing a General Psychiatry Residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1970. He also completed fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Family Therapy.
Dr. Privitera has served as Chief, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center; Chief of Outpatient and Inpatient Psychiatry, and Director, Psychiatric Education and Research at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and as Chief, Community Mental Health Service at Fort Meade. In addition, Dr. Privitera was the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences from 1979 to 1983. Dr. Privitera retired from the U.S. Army and has been Director of the University Counseling Service since 1990.
Dr. Privitera has been co-director of the USUHS second year Human Behavior Course from 1990 to 2004, as co-director of the National Capital Area Psychiatric Residency Training in Couples and Family Therapy from 1977 to present. Since 2008 to present, he has served as Senior Consultant to the NCC Psychiatric Residency Program.
