SURIP:

The ten week Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program (SURIP), an essential aspect of the Training Component of the USU Center for Health Disparities Research and Education (USUCHD), focuses on providing training opportunities for students from multiple ethnic and racial backgrounds who are interested in the area of health and health care disparities, science, and in pursuing careers in the biomedical sciences and healthcare fields. Students currently enrolled in accredited colleges or universities who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents may apply for acceptance into this program. Factors considered in the admissions process include:

  • cumulative GPA
  • belonging to a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in medicine
  • coming from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background

SURIP offers students an outstanding academic opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors on various research projects. The objective of this program is to help prepare, motivate, encourage, and support students who aspire to obtain an advanced degree in the sciences or healthcare fields. Opportunities are available in virtually all of the basic biomedical and bio-behavioral sciences in the laboratories of core faculty. In addition, this experience increases awareness of health disparity issues, and helps students understand the importance or science and research with respect to reducing and eliminating disparate healthcare.

Research mentors interact with the student researcher to integrate them fully into the research team, and to supervise the student's research activities. They are responsible for explaining policies, procedures, evaluative strategies and serving as role models and sounding boards for the students' research ideas. Research mentors coach the students with respect to developing a work schedule for the student's project, outlining research goals and methodologies, and establishing guidelines for the student researchers to follow.

An integrated and multidisciplinary environment provides unique opportunities and an enormous capacity to train students. Professional and social interactions with fellow students, faculty, and postdoctoral fellows are encouraged and cultivated by lunch/lab meetings, seminars, and gatherings for informal discussions with USU faculty, medical students, and graduate students. In addition, the SURIP features regular workshops and seminars on academic career opportunities, presentation and research skills, cultural sensitivity, and strategies for enhancing success in applying to graduate or medical school.
