Microscopic Imaging: Policies
The Imaging Core Facility of the Biomedical Instrumentation Center (BIC) provides both instruments and expertise to assist the USUHS research community in the pursuit of image-based research data. As the Imaging Core Facility aims to serve a diverse group of users, certain policies and procedures must be strictly adhered to in order to ensure that equipment is kept in good working order and that time on the instruments remains available to all who need it.
All users who wish to use BIC Imaging instruments must be trained in their proper use by BIC Imaging personnel (Tom Baginski or Dennis McDaniel). Users may not be trained by PIs, lab mates, or other users. There are no exceptions.
The length of the formal training is to be determined by BIC Imaging personnel and will be based on the trainee's previous experience, level of comfort, and the complexity of the techniques they wish to learn. During this training period, trainees will be charged for both instrument time and technical assistance. A valid grant number to charge for instrument usage and training must be provided to BIC Imaging personnel before training begins.
Training is ideally done on a one-to-one basis, but may be provided to a maximum of two trainees at any time at the trainer's discretion. Hands-on operation of the instrument is a crucial part of training and cannot realistically be accomplished with more than two trainees at a time.
Once the formal training is complete, users must use the instruments during normal business hours until BIC Imaging personnel are comfortable that the user will be able to handle any unforeseen situations. Permission to work off-hours will be granted on an individual basis.
Users should be respectful of other researcher's needs when signing up for instrument time. While we hope to not have to institute strict policies on things like the number of hours an individual or laboratory may sign up for, please keep your usage reasonable and be considerate of others.
Instrument reservations may be cancelled up to 24 hours in advance. If an instrument is reserved and not used, or if the reservation is cancelled within 24 hours of the planned start time, the user still must pay for the instrument time since they have precluded other researchers from using the instrument.
