Accommodations
There are many hotels in the National Capital Region to choose from when planning your visit to the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute. Online resources such as Washington.org and Fodors.com can help you find accommodations that best fit your needs.
For example, the Doubletree is located five blocks south (see green arrow in the lower-left corner of the adjacent map) of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. There are several alternative hotels close to AFRRI. Visit Washington.org or Fodors.com for more information about local lodging choices in the National Capital Region.
Notes
- The Medical Center Metro station (Red Line) is located across from NNMC's main gate.
- Wisconsin Avenue becomes Rockville Pike when traveling from Jones Bridge Road.
- The DoubleTree Hotel offers shuttle service to the Medical Center Metro station.
- Due to limited on-base parking, attendees at AFRRI events are highly encouraged to take advantage of the area's public transportation system.
Local Transportation
Airports
The Washington, DC, metropolitan area is served by three major airports: Baltimore-Washington International Airport, the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and Washington Dulles International Airport. Please vist their websites to view ground transport options, directions and maps.
Walking
It takes approximately 10 minutes to walk from most downtown Bethesda hotels to NNMC’s main gate, and another 10 minutes to walk from the front gate to AFRRI’s building.
Subway/Metro
After arriving by Metro's Red Lineat Medical Center station, take the escalator to the surface and walk toward the bus area in front of the escalator exit area. For details regarding how to use the area’s Metro rail lines, please visit Riding Metro at http://www.wmata.com/index.cfm.
NNMC campus shuttle buses
Blue Line and Gold Line buses depart every 15 minutes from the Medical Center subway station begining at 6:10 a.m. They will stop directly in front of AFRRI. Upon boarding the shuttle, have photo identification ready to present to security personnel at NNMC’s main gate.
Note
NNMC’s shuttle service does not operate between 8:55 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Service resumes at 2:45 p.m. and runs until 5:30 p.m.
If walking from the Medical Center subway station, cross Wisconsin Avenue at the traffic light onto South Wood Road and enter the WRNMMC installation via its main gate. Present identification at the guard booth and proceed ahead. Turn right onto Palmer Road South and continue past the hospital and across the bridge. AFRRI will be on your left.
