Location
The workshop’s science program will be held in the Conference Room of the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, adjacent to Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) on the grounds of the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC), Bethesda, Maryland (directions). The conference dinner, from 6 p.m. on Monday, May 5, will be held in the Small Dining Room of USU.
Lodging
DoubleTree Hotel, 8120 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20814 USAA block of rooms has been reserved at Bethesda’s DoubleTree Hotel, 8120 Wisconsin Avenue, located 5 blocks south of the NNMC (see green arrow at lower-left of map, right). These rooms will be held until April 15 and can be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. There are several other hotels close by AFRRI.

Upon notification of acceptance by the workshop Organizing Committee, we will provide recommended hotel information. When you contact the DoubleTree Hotel, cite this as your group/convention code: AFR. You may reserve a room via the hotel’s online reservation web page.

Notes:
a) The Metro subway’s Medical Center station (Red Line) is located across from the NNMC’s main gate.
b) From Jones Bridge Road, Wisconsin Avenue becomes Rockville Pike.
c) The DoubleTree Hotel offers free shuttle service to Medical Center subway station.

Local transportation
  • Airports: The Washington, DC, area is served by three major airports: Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI), Ronald Reagan National Airport, and Washington Dulles International Airport. Please visit their websites to view ground-transport options, directions, and maps.
  • Directions for traveling to the NNMC/AFRRI from points north, west, south.
  • Parking is limited on the NNMC grounds. Please consult its gate schedule.
  • Walking: It takes approximately 10 minutes to walk from downtown Bethesda hotels to the NNMC’s main gate, and another 10 minutes to walk from that gate to AFRRI’s building.
  • Bus: The DoubleTree Hotel, located 5 blocks from the NNMC, offers a free shuttle service (every hour on the hour, 7 a.m.–10 p.m.) to the Red Line subway’s Medical Center station. From there you can 1) walk across Wisconsin Avenue to access the NNMC’s main gate, or 2) take an NNMC campus shuttle bus (see below).
  • Subway/Metro: After arriving by Red Line subway at Medical Center station, take the escalator to the surface and walk toward the bus area in front of the escalator exit area. For details regarding how to use the area’s Metro rail lines, please visit its website and also its Riding Metro page for useful information regarding how to ride Metro subways and trains.
  • NNMC campus shuttle buses (Blue Line or Gold Line) depart every 15 minutes from the Medical Center subway station (6:10–8:55 a.m.) and will stop directly in front of AFRRI. Upon boarding the shuttle, have photo identification ready to present to security personnel at the NNMC’s main gate. Note: The NNMC’s shuttle service (schedule) does not operate between 8:55 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Service resumes at 2:45 p.m. and runs until 5:30 p.m. If walking from the Medical Center subway station, cross Wisconsin Avenue at the traffic light onto South Wood Road and enter the NNMC installation via its main gate. Present identification at the guard booth and proceed ahead. Turn right onto Palmer Road South and continue past the hospital and across the bridge. AFRRI will be on your left.
