The Medical Effects of Ionizing Radiation (MEIR) Course provides medical and operational personnel with information concerning the biomedical consequences of radiation exposure, how to manage its effects, and resulting casualties.

The Distributive Learning (online) MEIR course is a 6-hour, abbreviated version of the standard 2.5-day in-person MEIR course. It is designed to teach the basics or serve as a refresher for those who have taken the in-person course or have prior knowledge of the material.

About the course—The postgraduate-level course is composed of six interactive modules as listed below.

• Introduction to Radiological Threats and Radiation Hazards
• Physical and Biological Principles of Ionizing Radiation
• Late Effects of Radiation Exposure
• Management of Internal Radionuclide Contamination
• Psychological and Behavioral Issues Following a Radiation Incident
• Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS) and Combined Injury

Each module takes approximately one hour to complete. After finishing all six modules, there will be an exam to complete. An exam score of 80% is required to pass the course.

Accreditation
Physicians—The U.S. Army Medical Command is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The U.S. Army Medical Command designates this Enduring Material for a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s).™ No partial credit will be granted.

Nurses—This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the U.S. Army Nurse Corps Nursing Education Branch, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Cost for participants—There is no cost for participation.

How to register—The Distributive Learning MEIR Course is being offered on a quarterly basis. Those interested in taking the course should register through the AFRRI web site.

Taking the course:

1. At the start of the selected quarter, students will be sent access information via e-mail to access their account in Sakai (the platform where the course resides).
2. Once this information is received, students will then be able to log into Sakai, review the course instructions, and begin the course.
3. Students can return to complete subsequent modules at any time during the quarter, but they must complete all six modules and the exam by the end of the given quarter. Example: If student registers for the Fall quarter (1 Oct–31 Dec), they would be required to complete all sessions and the final exam by 31 December.
