Supplementary Materials Instructions

Thank you for completing the initial AMCAS application and for expressing interest in the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine. It is admirable that so many of our nation's young people are interested in serving as military medical corps officers. Please carefully read this entire letter before proceeding any further.

Although your verified AMCAS application may not have arrived in the Admissions Office. You are receiving this request for Supplemental Materials based on preliminary data, before any review of your credentials. You should note that the average MCAT for matriculants is 31 (with a 10 in each subtest) and the average grade point average is 3.6 (cumulative and in the sciences). In order to expedite review of your application, please review this list of prerequisites:

• Biology with Lab (1 year)
• Inorganic Chemistry with Lab (1 year)
• Organic Chemistry with Lab (1 year)
• Physics with Lab (1 year)
• English (1 year)
• Calculus (1 semester)
• Biochemistry and Statistics are highly recommended, though not required
• MCAT results (April 2010-September 2012)
• U.S. Citizenship
• Age Requirements
  • Due to commissioning standards, all students must be at least 18 years old at the time of matriculation, but no older than 36 as of June 30th in the year of matriculation. Applicants who have reached their 36th birthday by 30 June 2013 will have to request an age waiver prior to an offer. At this time, it is not necessary to submit a request. We will inform you at the appropriate time.
• Baccalaureate Degree granted no later than 1 June 2013
• Clinical Experience
  Clinical Experience is defined as traditional clinical activity with patients and/or health care professionals or paraprofessionals.
• Letter of Approval (only required for Enlisted, Commissioned, Reserve, ROTC, Academy, and National Guard Applicants)

How should you proceed if you lack any of these prerequisites?

Academic Prerequisites

All academic coursework must be completed by 1 June 2013. If you lack any of the above courses and are planning to complete them before June 1st, please submit a statement with your secondary application informing the Admissions Committee of when and where you are taking the class, the name of the class and number of credit hours.

MCAT Scores

If you do not have MCAT results to submit, you must take the exam during the months of June through September 2012 to be eligible.

Clinical Experience

If you have not already done so, you should attempt to gain some clinical experience, NOW. Be sure to submit a statement with your secondary application explaining where you are undertaking this work, the nature of the work, the number of hours (per week), and the name of the professional who will write the letter of recommendation for you detailing your performance. (There is no minimum number of hours for consideration. However, more experience is always better than less.) If you are unable to gain any clinical experience, you MUST submit a statement explaining in detail why you have not engaged in clinical activities.

Letter of Approval

You should contact your service liaison as soon as possible (see Notice to Military Applicants). You may submit your application without a final letter of approval. However, the Admissions Committee will not make a final decision on your application without this letter.

U.S. Citizenship

If you are able to gain citizenship prior to 1 November 2012, you may continue with the application. However, you must submit the following information to the Admissions Office immediately: the place of your hearing, the petition #, and the date of your hearing. If you are not able to gain citizenship by 1 November 2012, then your file will be deactivated. U.S. citizenship is required for commissioning purposes and cannot be waived for any reason.

Submitting your Supplimental Material

There is no fee for processing secondary applications. Before you submit your package, be sure to thoroughly review every instruction and/or attachment on the Secondary Website. Supplimental material must be returned within three weeks from the date on the emailed notification. Supplimental materialmay be submitted by postal mailto:

Formsmust be submitted TOGETHER.  Do NOT email some forms and mail the others.

Please keep in mind that those competitive candidates whose files are completed first are eligible for interview first. This increases the chance of full acceptance and lowers the chance of being placed on a waiting list. Completing this application late in the cycle could place a candidate at a severe disadvantage.
