The School of Medicine graduated its first class of uniformed physicians in 1980. These 29 officers set a precedence for excellence in military medicine that would continue with each succeeding class. Today, the School of Medicine and Graduate School of Nursing have prepared thousands of distinguished alumni to care for those in harm's way. Aspiring health professionals choose USU because they are committed to career service in the Department of Defense and United States Public Health Service. Graduate education is an important part of the university's overall mission. Civilian and uniformed students have the opportunity to make significant contributions to the advancement of science and health in both public and private institutions. Students in the Graduate School of Nursing gain international perspectives on leadership, education, research and service. At USU, School of Medicine students enjoy the same opportunities as their civilian counterparts, as well as unique options in areas including preventive and public health medicine. Because USU students learn in a multi service environment, they are able to adapt to the unique requirements of each uniformed service and better transition into the leadership roles they will take on in the Department of Defense and Public Health Service. Each uniformed officer's vision for the future is twofold: to become outstanding medical professionals and dedicated leaders in the Military Health System.
